WAS WILD PRAIRIE WHEN ROBERT HOOD CAME HERE

Robert Hood, who has been sick since last March, died at his home south of Shenandoah Thursday and was buried in the Rose Hill cemetery Sunday. The burial was in charge of the Odd Fellows. All the children and his two brothers, Peter of Canada and W. A. Hood of Nebraska, were at his bedside when he died.
Mr. Hood was born in England October 26, 1845. When but of eighteen months old his parents moved to Canada. At the age of twenty he left home and came to Beula County, Ill. January 5 1870 he was united in marriage to Miss Miriama Meas and came to Creston in 1872. Four years later in 1876, they moved to Shenandoah, when this country was wild prairie. Being on of the oldest settlers in this community, he was widely known throughout the country and highly esteemed.
He is survived by his wife and eight children; E. W. Hood and Albert Hood of Council Bluffs, May Whitehill, Elizabeth Spangler of Shenandoah, Edgar, who lives in Canada, and Robert, Ross and Bell who live at home. There are two brothers and two sisters in Canada and one brother in Nebraska. The funeral services were conducted at the home by Rev. F. M. McGlumphry. The regular Odd Fellows funeral ceremonies were given at the grave conducted by J.F. Miller, Noble Grand, and Chaplain Louis J Winn. The Noble Grand stood at the head of the casket and the Chaplain at the foot with the lodge supporters of the Noble Grand and Conductor and Warden alongside the grave with their wands of office in position. After the ceremonies each Odd Fellow in turn passed alongside the open grave dropping an evergreen sprig into the grave of their departed brother as a token of his remembrance and as each did so, he said, “Farewell.”
