Obituary, 28 Jan 1919, Winfield, Cowley County, Kansas, USA. 1841 Martin - One of the saddest deaths in this community, recently occurred at St. Mary's hospital, Tuesday noon at twelve o'clock when Mrs. Leroy Martin of Burden passed away leaving two little daughters, twins, born on Tuesday, Jan 21, 1919 both fatherless and motherless. The father, Sergeant Leroy Martin was one of the boys from Cowley County who made the supreme sacrifice in France on November 1, 1918 when he was "killed in action." The sympathy of the entire community is extended the bereaved relatives who have been called on to bear the loss of son and daughter, brother and sister and it is that the prayer of all the lives of the little babes will be spared to comfort those left. Mrs. Martin was Miss Ethel Leach, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bert Leach of Burden before her marriage and was 24 years old last September. She graduated from the Burden high school and taught in the rural schools of Cowley County several years prior to her marriage and was held in the very highest esteem by all who knew her. She was a young woman of beautiful character and devout Christian. On August 23, 1917, she was united in marriage to Leroy Martin of Atlanta, who was called to service from this county in 1917. She leaves besides her parents, four sisters, Mrs. Byron Darlington of Phoenix, Arizona, Mrs. Brice Paine, Miss Leta Leach and Miss Tilda Leach of Burden. Mr. Martin was a brother of Willis Martin and grandson of Willis Wilson of Winfield. Mrs. Martin was a cousin of Mrs. John Gessler and Ross Wilkins both of this city. The body was taken to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Willis Martin on Loomis street and will be taken to Burden Thursday where the funeral will be held and interment will be made there. The time of the funeral has not been arranged pending the arrival of Mrs. Darlington from Arizona.

Funeral, 30 Jan 1919, Winfield, Cowley County, Kansas, USA. 1842 Funeral and Memorial Service
The funeral of Mrs. Leroy Martin who died Tuesday noon was held in Burden Thursday afternoon at two o'clock at which time a memorial service was conducted in honor of her husband, Sergeant Marin, who made the supreme sacrifice in France on November 1, 1918, when killed in action. The pall bearers chosen were soldiers returned from service. It was one of the largest funerals ever held in Burden. Interment was made in the Burden cemetery.
