• Obituary, Jun 2008. 186 Private family services for former Amity resident H. Allen "Harvey" Robbins of Portland will be held at Bethel Cemetery in Bethel. Arrangements are being handled by Macy & Son Funeral Directors. Mr. Robbins died Sunday, June 1, at the West Hills Health and Rehabilitation Center in Portland. He was 93. Born in Amity on Aug. 7, 1914, he was the son of Elmer and Lottie (Allen) Robbins. He started his education in Amity and graduated from Salem High School in 1933. While attending Linfield College, he married Zelma M. Kreider on Dec. 18, 1937. He studied electronics at Port Arthur College in Port Arthur, Texas. He developed an interest in two-way radio communication in 1931 and continued to pursue it throughout his life. After college, he served as a ship-board radio operator and a technical representative for the Philco Corporation. He then spent 30 years in communications and electronics maintenance with the Federal Aviation Administration. While working with the FAA, he made his home by turns in Idaho, Montana, Washington, California and Oregon. He moved to Salem to retire in 1988. He later relocated to Portland. Through his ham radio station, W7AM, he made confirmed contact with 338 foreign countries. In addition to his wife, Mr. Robbins is survived by two sons, Lawrence of Tualatin and Richard of Mount Airy, N.C.; a daughter, Linda Terrell of Bend; nine grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
