Obituary, 31 Dec 1914, Canton, Fulton County, Illinois, USA. 1081 in the Canton Daily Ledger: Another Pioneer Dies; Lived Here Nearly 80 Years - Mrs. Lorana Potter, widow of Hamilton potter and a resident of Canton and vicinity for 80 years, died at 11:20 o'clock Sunday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Jennie Hindson, 417 East Chestnut street. Death was due to paralysis, an attack of which she suffered Friday. Lorana Spencer was born March 15, 1823 in Lawrence county, Illinois and came to Fulton county with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Richardson Spencer when she was 11 years of age. From that time until her death she lived in this county, the last thirty years being spent in Canton. She was married to Hamilton Potter when she was eighteen years of age, and his death occured about twenty-one years ago. Of a family of seven children, two survive. They are, Mrs. Sybilla Williamson and Mrs. Jennie Hindson, both of Canton. Three children died in infancy and two daughters more recently - Mrs. John Skillman, two years ago, and Mrs. Poebe Layton about five years ago. There are ten grandchildren and twenty-four great-grandchildren. Three sisters and one brother of the decedent are living. They are, Mrs. Nancy Dark <illegible>, Mrs. Ophelia Simpson of Abingdon, Mrs. Rachel Cowser, of Peroria and John Spencer who lives in California. Mrs. Potter was one of the first members of the First Baptist church of Canton, but in later years she affiliated with the Latter Day Saints. She was a woman possessed of a wealth of experience of pioneer days and widely known and loved during her long residence in this county. The funeral will be held at the home, 417 East Chestnut steet, at 1 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, and burial will be in the Orendorff cemetery.
