www.wowtv.com: A family dream has become the reality of a new community center in Millard. Dolores and Willis Armbrust cut the ribbon Saturday at the opening of the new YMCA near 168th and Q streets. The Armbrust family donated the land to the YMCA about 12 years ago and helped to raise the more than $7 million to build the facility. Why? "We need something for the community," says Willis Armbrust. A far cry from the barn that once stood on the property. "That was back in the '60s and we decided that if we can convert that into something like this we've got it made," says Willis. "So we had the dream." Willis says for years, his son Scott and his high school friends played basketball in the barn. "We had a lot of fun in the old barn with the boys playing basketball, that was our Y," says Scott. It has a full fitness center complete with all sorts of equipment, plus rooms for exercise classes, personal training and community meetings. "It's wonderful to see it and our intent was to have a safe haven for children," says Dolores Armbrust. "We were fortunate enough to have a rural residence and a barn where the kids could play, have good clean fun and that's where the Y came in." Five hundred families have already signed up as members. "I only live about two blocks away so it's very nice, very convenient to go down and just kind of hang out," says YMCA member Scott Barker. "I can play hoops, work out, run a little bit." "I'm looking forward to being able to use the workout equipment, the treadmills and take classes that I've taken at the other Y, but to be able to come here and not spend 30 or 40 minutes driving back and forth to get somewhere where I can do that type of thing," says YMCA member Rhonda Petersen. The official public opening is on January 2nd.
Willis married E. Dolores NIELSEN. (E. Dolores NIELSEN was born on 28 Aug 1928,20,2646 died on 15 Nov 2013 in Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska, USA 20 and was buried on 18 Nov 2013 in Evergreen Memorial Park; Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska, USA 20.)
