Biography. 3802 He was a songwriter who, with Clarence Williams, wrote "'Round Midnight". In 1934 he had a big hit with, "When a Woman Loves a Man", co-written with Gorden Jenkins. Bing Crosby made "Bob White (Whatcha Gonna Swing Tonight)" a hit. It was written by Bernard and Johnny Mercer. Some notable people Bernard worked with were Billie Holiday, John Hammond, Sr., Cozy Cole, Teddy Wilson, John Kirby, and Roy Eldridge. He wrote the lyrics for the 1946 Broadway musical Lute Song, starring Mary Martin and Yul Brynner.
